  • The National Watersport Festival back at Rutland Water alongside the return of the Rutland Festival

The National Watersports Festival (NWF) is back this year and bringing with it the return of the Rutland Festival that will run alongside this prestigious sporting event, which sees around 500 competitors and 10,000 spectators taking advantage of everything Rutland Water has to offer.

Taking place across the weekend of the 8 – 10th June, the National Watersports Festival is a three-day extravaganza of windsurfing and stand up paddle boarding (SUP), attracting all ages and levels, from complete beginners to Olympic level riders. Racing, demos, talks, trade show, clinics and product launches are all part and parcel of the packed festival of events.

For visitors who may never have tried windsurfing or stand up paddle boarding, they can dip their toe in the water, with taster sessions for beginners taking place across the whole three days. Last year PADI also provided taster sessions and for the first time ever, recreational divers were allowed in Rutland Water. This year, joining PADI will be the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) who will be coordinating all the above water taster sessions and, alongside windsurfing and SUP, will be offering dinghy sailing and kayaking, to complete a full compliment of water based activities for everyone to enjoy.

Now in its 12 th year – the second at Rutland Water – NWF organisers, supported by Anglian Water are looking to grow the event further and, in so doing, have reintroduced a much-loved event – the Rutland Festival – to coincide with the weekend.

Some of the best local food producers and suppliers are being lined up to join all the weekend’s festivities, including x and y. The Grainstore Brewery will again be sponsoring the festival and, as well as providing a full bar, which includes their exceptional local beers and ales, will also be staging all the live music across the weekend.

“We’re delighted to be back at Rutland Water” explains Allan Cross, NWF events director. The people of the East Midlands really took the event to their hearts last year and helped us to feel right at home, after 10 years of the event being based on the south coast (Hayling Island).

“As a national event the NWF attracts competitors from across the UK and indeed the world. However, incorporating the Rutland Festival alongside it, will help us to appeal to a greater regional audience, who will be able to take advantage of all the offerings from both events.”

Will Kirstein from Anglian Water commented: “The NWF was an enormous success last year with the water a hive of activity from start to finish. Rutland Water has all the facilities to stage a festival of this scale and also provides a very natural amphitheatre for watching the racing, so it definitely lends itself to an event like the NWF.

“At points across the weekend the water is a mass of colour and sails, with hundreds of competitors in the water at one time. When the sun goes down the activity doesn’t stop but steps up a gear with incredible flood-lit, night time ‘freestyle’ events with the pro windsurfers performing jumps and stunts just metres from the shore. All this is set against the back drop of live music and partying.

“With the Rutland Festival being included, it will add another really exciting component to an already successful weekend. We’ll even have Mutts Nutts Rescue – a charity heavily involved in rescuing dogs in the Stamford and Rutland areas joining in; adding to the very community feel that the weekend will offer.”

Competitor tickets for the event go on sale next month but locals are being invited to visit the event during the day for just £5, which includes parking and a free taster session in any of the sports.
